I've always been facinated by why people force themselves to eat crazy crap out there in the big wide world. I've always wanted (well apprehensively wanted) to drink a snake blood vodka shot. Now this experience I'd heard about before as being a bravery/medicinal sort of ritual and this is actually ture. The mythology behind eating these wacky animals is basically (and this is a very basic summary from me here) that the main attribute of the animal will determine what part of the body it will help fix or relieve. So for instance, this whole snake eating and blood drinking business is meant to help primary with the back given that snakes are vetibrates and can wiggle and jiggle themselves around like the green gooey Flubber in well...Flubber... but it is also meant to make you feel like a man which I think comes from the eating of a snakes heart and blood - raw I might add. I can feel most girls cringing at the thought of being near a snake let alone eating it, well let me make things even worse. Okay so they grab the snake and 2 blokes hold it down. By law this snake has to be 1kg to be eaten so it is quite large, an adult one I guess you could say. They grab a small, very sharp knife and you watch the make an incision through the belly right where the heart is. They then cut the main artery coming from it's heart after they've pried it out into the open, the poor snake is writhing around but is silent. Then they cut the artery and the blood spurts into a funnel and into a Hanoi vodka bottle, a small amount big enough for about 5 or so shots max I'm guessing. I still have that bottle of blood as we only wanted the one shot. Anyway, apologies for being so graphic but I'm sure some might want to know the gory details. The snake is then taken away and no part is wasted as they cook it up in an elaborate meal I've never ever experienced before. 11 course from memory are brought out, with an overload of food for 2 people, waaaay too much. But you eat everything from crispy snake skin crackling, to snake bone soup... it's just water with the WHOLE snake skeleton floating in it (whole except for the ribs, those are mashed with meat into crunchy meat ball things). The organs are all turned into food and yeah, pretty much anything you've dreamt could come from a snake is eaten but not the eyeballs. The cost for this whole exotic experience was $20 US but they initially asked for $40 however we tried a walk away tactic as well as using Vietnamese pretty much the whole way to act probably more experienced in the matter than we were!!!
